Expansion of the Pampalo Mine
We are planning an expansion of the Pampalo Mine operations. The project is located in the village of Hattuvaara in the municipality of Ilomantsi, approximately 40 kilometres northeast of the municipal centre. In addition to the current mining area (the Pampalo mining concession), the project area includes a new mining permit area and a water pipeline to Lake Hattujärvi.
The proposed changes to the Pampalo operations include the expansion of the tailings storage facility, waste rock and soil stockpile areas, and the extension and deepening of both the underground mine and the open pit. The project also includes the abstraction of raw water from Lake Hattujärvi. Surface operations will be expanded within the boundaries of the existing Pampalo mining concession and mining area. Only the underground mining operations will extend into the new mining permit area.
The expansion will enable the Pampalo Mine to continue operating in its current form well into the future.
The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Programme for the expansion of the Pampalo Mine was submitted to the authorities in summer 2026. More information is available on the Finnish Environment Institute’s project page (in Finnish).
