AliveMine launches in a new era of mining

Endomines has launched AliveMine, a new operating model that integrates sustainability communications, and the development of mining operations. AliveMine is a regenerative approach that challenges traditional mining thinking and invites the entire industry to view the future through new eyes.

The model is based on the understanding that merely complying with regulatory requirements is no longer sufficient, and that minimizing environmental harm is only a starting point—not the goal.

Investments in the mining industry are long-term by nature, and in the future, low emission levels, for example to water systems, will not be an acceptable benchmark: waters must be clean. Our stakeholders already expect solutions from us that not only reduce negative impacts, but actively improve the environment, strengthen communities, and create long-term economic value.

This is what regenerative mining means—our purpose is to leave behind more opportunities than we take away.

Learning from nature holds untapped potential

The development of the operating model was driven by two core insights:

• Nature is the most intelligent system we know

By this we mean nature’s ability to function as an integrated whole, where everything influences everything else. In natural processes, nothing is waste—every by-product becomes a nutrient or building block for the next process. Changes in one area are immediately reflected throughout the entire ecosystem. AliveMine seeks to learn from nature by mimicking its processes.

• A mine is not just a facility, but the sum of its parts

We must move away from managing individual functions toward managing the entire system as a whole. The operating model leverages the intelligence of nature to develop sustainable solutions for the future of the mining industry.

Nature sets the limits, knowledge brings wisdom

The starting point of AliveMine is that nature defines the boundaries within which decisions must be made. If these limits are exceeded, operations cannot be sustainable in the long term. The model takes a clear stance on the restoration of water systems, proactive energy systems, the intelligent recycling of mining waste, and the preservation of biodiversity.

• Restoration of water systems

The purity of waters surrounding a mine is the single most critical long-term factor for operational viability and social acceptance. Under the AliveMine model, mining activities do not deteriorate the condition of groundwater or surface waters—and at best, they actively support the recovery of aquatic ecosystems.

• Proactive energy system

Energy is one of the largest sources of costs and emissions. The model drives a transition toward a fossil-free and proactive energy system that adapts to changing environmental conditions and operational needs of the mine. In practice, this includes electrification of mining processes and a target to achieve net zero emissions from our own operations by 2035.

• Smart recycling of mining waste

Mining waste represents the largest physical footprint of our operations. Our objective is to ensure the recycling and utilization of materials throughout the entire life cycle of the mine. Materials are safely placed in underground backfill, and we are exploring a transition toward dry stacking of tailings.

• Actions toward net positive impact

Mining activities inevitably affect biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems, landscapes, and species populations. We work closely with local stakeholders to identify, protect, and restore the most important natural sites. Our development path progresses step by step from a no net loss level toward a net positive impact.

In day-to-day operations, real-time data serves as the backbone and guiding force of our work. It enables early detection of changes, proactive risk management, and rapid, safe adaptation and improvement of operations. When nature and data guide decision-making together, mining can truly adapt and evolve.

Yes, we can change the entire mining industry in Finland

AliveMine also emphasizes the importance of people. A mine can operate and grow only when employees are kept safe and mining is a socially accepted part of the local community. That is why transparency, safety, and trust are central to the AliveMine model: we must listen, engage in dialogue, and strengthen local vitality through our actions.

AliveMine is only the beginning, but the direction is clear. True change can only be achieved through industry-wide collaboration, and Endomines therefore invites the entire mining sector to help build the future together. AliveMine has already received an enthusiastic response from industry peers.

The journey has begun, and as a pioneer of sustainable mining, Endomines is leading the way.
