Towards gold, towards a better future – Eero Mäntyranta

There was a time when Finland as a free nation was only a golden dream. Even then Finland had a strong national culture with remarkable artistic achievements and language of its own. Sports, and skiing in particular, became an important feature of that culture.

People were often poor, but they had very concrete dreams of a better future: food, clothes and a warm home. Many also dreamed of wealth and golden treasures, but in reality, the standard of living improved by hard work in the fields and in the forests, and later in industries, mines, laboratories and offices.
